The Water Cistern
We are lucky enough to have been chosen for the installation of a rain water collection system. The city put this cistern in during August of 2013. It was paid for by a grant from the federal government through soil and water conservation. A new downspout was cut in the roof line to bring water from on top of the south wing (gym, art room, 3rd grade rooms, and 4th grade rooms). The pipes run underground up to the cistern. The cistern sits on top of a concrete footing, and can carry 1,000 gallons of water at capacity. You can tell how much water is in the tank by looking at the small pipe on the corner by the stairs. There is a red slider that is attached to a float in the tank. The lower the slider, the fuller the tank. The tank has to be drained during times of freeze risk (October to April) because the pipes would burst.
